Woodlands surround it. Some encroach.
Or perhaps are welcomed,
as adornment and defense.
No one can remember a house ever
being there. No one can remember the
mailbox ever not being there. But most
days, no one thinks of the mailbox.
Today, however, its flag is up. There is
within it a dispatch.

The Haunted Mailbox Was Conceived Largely of Nostalgia
Nostalgia first for 1980s and ‘90s PG (-ish…) horror. Not too violent, not too gory but still gets under your skin. Usually, a little funny, or at least ironic. Poltergeist, for instance. Also, Gremlins, The Lost Boys, Fright Night, Trick or Treat, American Werewolf in London, Night of the Comet… You get the idea.
Secondly, nostalgia for the old 1940s Science Fiction Lit ‘Zines. Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures, and Weird Tales to name a few. These were often digest size – 5.5 x 8.5 (14 cm x 21.6 cm) – lower-quality publications. They were independently produced, and offered a space for fans to share their own stories, artwork, and commentary.
We know several talented, up-and-coming writers. (You can say you knew them when!) We also know quite a few clever and capable artists. We sided-eyed each other and said, why the heck not?!

Vale Vonn is a self-confessed Gorehound gone soft. As a teenager she had subscriptions to both Fangoria and Gore Zone magazines; today she watches even the trailers through her fingers and sometimes sleeps with the lights on if no one else is home.
